Everything’s Gone Green Since Lockdown as Brits Create Major Revival for Houseplants

Brits are fostering a significant revival in houseplants and green foliage, directly influenced by the lockdown and the extended time spent indoors.

In recent years, a growing number of shoppers have embarked on a mission to bring the outdoors inside their homes, adorning their spaces with calming hues like green foliage.


This trend, reminiscent of 70s interior design, has witnessed a staggering surge in demand for houseplants, exceeding 130 percent at Tesco since 2019.

Vicki l’Anson, Tesco Plants Buyer, commented: “We first noticed the trend during the early months of lockdown, a direct consequence of people being confined to their homes and unable to frequent parks and other open spaces. However, the trend quickly gained momentum as individuals took to social media to showcase their homes adorned with houseplants. It has now become even more pronounced than before.”

She added, “Importantly, this trend also benefits our partnerships with UK growers, as we collaborate to meet the escalating demand with exceptional British-grown plants.”

This surge in demand is proving beneficial for UK plant growers, who are scaling up production to meet the heightened interest.

Bury Lane, a prominent UK grower based near Royston, Hertfordshire, predominantly dealing in cut flowers such as lilies, peonies, and agapanthus, has pivoted its indoor production exclusively to houseplants, producing over 500,000 annually.

The company’s subsidiary, Geb & Green, clinched a Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show last year and the Best House Plant Studio award.

Will Clayton, Managing Director of Bury Lane, highlighted that the current surge is driven by the growing environmental consciousness, particularly among younger demographics keen on cultivating indoor gardens.

“The current consumer focus in home plants leans towards foliage rather than flowers, with younger individuals showing keen interest in cultivating their indoor sanctuaries with evergreen plants. Not everyone has access to an outdoor garden, and with prevailing high interest rates, younger individuals striving to enter the housing market seek to enhance the appeal and allure of their accommodations,” said Will.


He continued, “One simple and cost-effective way to achieve this is by incorporating serene houseplants into your living space. A quick browse through social media platforms will reveal numerous individuals proudly sharing their latest home additions.”
